Hongsavady Vongxay came back from a loss to tour director Mike Zuglan and won the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop this weekend at Salt City Billiards in N. Syracuse NY.
Playing his first tournament with his new Stephen Janes Joss Cue, it looked like smooth sailing for Zuglan after a 9-4 win over Vongxay for the hot-seat.
Vongxay went to the left side of the board to face off with Karen Corr who was on a winning streak after losing her first match on Saturday to Zuglan. Corr had won seven straight matches to get to Vongxay and had her sights set on a rematch with Zuglan in the finals.
Vongxay took a big lead early in the set, but Corr came back to tie the match at 8-8. The nerves at hill-hill might have gotten the better of both players as they did not play their expected games in the case rack. Vongxay did end up taking the last game for the 9-8 win.
Vongxay played like a different person in the first set against Zuglan. He quickly raced to a 4-1 lead and fought off a late charge from Zuglan to win the set 9-6. The second set also saw Vongxay take an early lead, but this time he kept control of the match and cruised to a 9-4 win.
Vongxay earned $1200 in prize money, while Zuglan took home $800 for second. Corr and Rich Difulio filled out the top four spots.
The Joss NE 9-Ball tour will be at Adirondack Billiards in Glens Falls, NY for their next event on October 8th-9th.
