Usual Suspects Advance at Turning Stone Classic Day One

Kevin West

Day two is underway at the Joss NE 9-Ball Tours Turning Stone Classic XXXVII at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, NY. Day one matches brought very little as far as surprises.

Two Joss Tour regulars kicked off the event at 4pm on Thursday when Tour points leader Ron Casanzio faced Kevin West. Neither player led by more than two racks for the duration of this match. Casanzio got to the hill first at 8-7, but was quickly joined by West at 8-8. Casanzio had a shot to end it, with a 2-9 carom, but hung the money ball. West calmly pocketed the two and then a 3-9 combo to stay on the winner’s side.

Matches at 6pm included young gun Lukas Fracasso-Verner and Joss Tour regular Nick Antonakos. Antonakos drew first blood at 1-0, but it was all Fracasso-Verner after that, with a final score of 9-2.

World Nineball ranked #34, Jonas Souto had an early 5-1 lead over Canadian Jacques Bouchard in their first round match. Bouchard took advantage of a couple opportunities left by Souto, as well as multiple 9-ball breaks, to win five straight racks and hold a 6-5 lead. Even at that point, Souto didn’t appear to be worried and he showed the reason why, as he regained control and won four straight racks for the 9-6 win.

The evening rounds saw the usual list of favorites advancing, with wins from Fedor Gorst, Lee Vann Corteza, Donny Mills, Bucky Souvanthong, Jeremy Sossei, Hunter Lombardo, Matt Krah and Caroline Pao. Also advancing on the winner’s side in Thursday evening rounds were the Brother Vaughan, as both Junior players, Garrett and Grayson Vaughan won their first round matches.

Friday action is underway and will continue until the final round of play kicks off at 10:00 PM EST tonight.
