The 2011 US Open 9-Ball Championship got underway on Sunday, October 16th with a field of 251 players with hopes of winning the $30,000 first prize.
Day one play saw most of the usual suspects winning fairly lopsided matches, but the day did see a handful of top names taking early trips to the left side of the board.
Corey Deuel's 11-8 loss to Li Wen Lo would really not be considered an upset, as either player was going to have to bring their "A game" to win this match. Deuel trailed early, but came back to tie the match at 7-7, before a couple uncharacteristic errors gave Lo all the opportunity he needed.
John Schmidt lost an 11-8 match to Antonia Gabia, that saw Schmidt with a 7-5 lead before Gabica upped his game and took control of the match.
While those two matches would not really count as upsets, BJ Ussery's 11-5 win over former Champion Kim Davenport might have been the biggest upset of the day.
Day two will see the completion of the first round of play, along with winners side matches from round two.
