Day one at the Joss Tour's Turning Stone Classic XVII is in the books and half the field of 128 players is now on the wrong side of the board. While Shane Van Boening and Mike Davis are the biggest names on the one loss side, they are joined by such notables as Shaun Wilkie, Jeff Kennedy, Jennifer Baretta and Liz Ford.
The tournament got underway Thursday with the 4pm round, which featured one sided wins by Johnny Archer and Jeremy Sossei (9-2 wins over Jason Reese and Bob Baker). Mike Davis fell to Joshua Newman that saw a 2-2 tie end up as a 9-3 loss for Davis. Shawn Putnam's match with Mike Badsteubner was close early, but Putnam pulled away late for the 9-5 win. Chris Szuter defeated Liz Ford 9-6 on the TV table in a true battle.
The 6pm round saw one of the bigger upsets of the first round as Bucky Souvanthong defeated Shane Van Boening on the TV table 9-6 in a match that never saw Van Boening lead. In other 6pm action, Oscar Dominguez made quick work of Cleiton Rocha 9-2 and Josh Ulrich took advantage of a late opening in the event to enter the tournament and defeat Brian Lipes 9-3.
Action on the TV table at 8pm saw Jose Parica defeat Shaun Wilkie in a lopsided 9-4 match. Another 9-4 winner was Angel Paglia over Joey Dupuis. Jeff Kennedy ended up on the wrong end of a 9-8 battle with Thomas Zippler. Zippler led the match 4-1 before a Kennedy comeback tied the match at 4-4. Zippler again led the match by three at 8-5, only to see Kennedy again come back to tie the match at 8-8 before losing the match 9-8.
The final round of the night saw several lopsided wins by tournament favorites. Charlie Williams, Rodney Morris, Dennis Hatch, Larry Nevel, Mike Zuglan and Steve Lillis all cruised to easy wins. Another big winner in the round was Alex Pagulayan, who defeated Angelo Inness 9-6 in a match that wasn't nearly as close as the score would indicate.
Friday action begins at 10am Eastern Time. Marquee matches on Friday will include Pagulayan vs Morris, Archer vs Sossei, Mike Zuglan vs Dennis Hatch, Ernesto Dominguez vs Chris Orme and Jose Parica vs Angel Paglia.
