Ramilo Tanglao, who has a reputation for making 9-ball combinations, used two of them in the finals of the Tri-State Tour stop on Saturday, October 16, to help secure a victory over Gail Glazebrook, the 2010 BCAPL National 8-Ball Women's Champion, who was in the hot seat when their final match began. The $750-added event drew 18 to Master Billiards in Queens, NY.
Tanglao opened the tournament with victories over Sameer Mohamed and Ken Decuire to move among the winners' side final four, but fell to Alan Chan 6-2, forcing him to work from the one-loss side. Chan moved into the hot seat match versus Glazebrook, who had opened with wins over Kapriel Delimelkonoglu (a shutout) and Karen Friere, and then sent Louis Alicea west 7-5. Glazebrook sat in the hot seat following a 6-5 win over Chan.
First up for Tanglao on the one-loss side was a second match against Mohamed, who had gotten by Friere 6-3 and Arsim Caprice 6-5. Aicea squared off against Delimelkonoglu, who'd defeated DeCuire 6-5 and Josh Nudell 6-4. Tanglao defeated Mohamed a second time, this time 6-5, as Delimelkonoglu dropped Alicea into the tie for fifth place 7-4. Tanglao got into yet another double hill matchup, but prevailed in the quarterfinals against Delimelkonoglu. He downed Chan in the subsequent semifinal matchup 6-3 for a shot at Glazebrook.
In the final matchup that followed, tied up at 2-2, Tanglao sunk his first 9-ball combination to win the fifth rack and take a lead he would not relinquish and grow to a four-point margin by the end of the match. He won two straight to go up 4-2, but no sooner had Glazebrook closed the gap to one, than he used a second combination on the 9-ball to win the eighth rack. Glazebrook would win only one of the next four, giving Tanglao an 8-4 match and event victory.
