With Susan Williams closing out the AWBT season with her third 1st place finish, and a runaway 1st place finish in the points standings, people might begin referring to this organization as the “All Williams Billiard Tour.”
October 23rd and 24th brought the wonderful women of the west back to Bull Shooters Billiards in Phoenix for the final stop of the 2010 season. A big thanks goes to Mike, Julie and Brooke and all the other people at Bull Shooters for the great food, great service and providing the best place to play in Phoenix. We appreciate Bull Shooters being our official home for the 2010 season! We hope to be back next year.
This tournament, featuring the game of 9-Ball on 9-ft. tables, was deprived the presence of 2nd place points leader, Samm Diep (Aurora, CO), who was busy providing media coverage for the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships in Chesapeake, VA. Diep’s absence cost her second place in the point standings, as Sara Miller (Glendale, AZ) was able to capitalize and pass her by ten points. The significance of that exchange will only be fully realized if and when Miller receives an invitation to play in the WPBA Regional Tour Championships or a women’s pro event, and Diep does not.
Also capitalizing on this tournament’s slightly shrunken field was eventual runner-up, Susan Wilbur (Gilbert, AZ). Wilbur started her weekend on a low note by losing her first round match to Claudia Justus (Chandler, AZ) by the score of 7-5. On the “B” side, however, she buckled down and dispatched Kathleen Lawless (Phoenix, AZ) 7-5, Claudia Justus in a rematch 7-3, Sunny Griffin (Henderson, NV) 7-5, and Susan Mello (Scottsdale, AZ) (F), to earn her a birth in the finals against Williams.
Williams (Chandler, AZ) had a slightly easier time of it by first defeating Edwidge Cavanna (Tucson, AZ) 7-3, then Sunny Griffin 7-6, then Claudia Justus 7-5, and then Susan Mello 7-0 to claim the hot seat.
In the final match, Williams quickly took control and all but cruised to her 1st place prize by the score of 9-4.
As with all AWBT tournaments this season, raffle tickets for a J. Pechauer custom cue, were sold to anyone present, and the drawing was held just prior to the final match. This final raffle of the season raised a record amount of $341 to help support the AWBT, and the lucky winner of the beautiful $750 valued cue was Andre LeBeau of Pleasant Hill, CA. Andre was not present when his name was announced, so we called him and let him know he won. We will be shipping the cue to him. Sorry, no picture.
The winner of the Second Chance tournament was Pat Schultz of Peoria, AZ, she took home $30
Thank you to all the ladies that participated in the Second Chance event.
