Family Billiards in Burlington, North Carolina hosted the second stop on the 2008-2009 Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour December 6-7. A nineteen player field turned out for the $1000 guaranteed added Main Event in which Sam Monday defeated Mike Davis, earning $1000 for first place.
To kick things off, an Early Bird Tournament was held on Friday night. Cary Dunn defeated Chris Vollmar (7-5) in the final match. Results for this event were: 1st Cary Dunn $100; 2nd Chris Vollmar $40; and 3rd Paul Allison $20.
On Sunday, there were three mini-tournaments. First place in the Junior Tournament went to Palmer Richardson. Tops honors in the Ladies' Tournament went to Katie Cowan, who defeated Cassandra Locke (9-3). Finally, Thomas Sansone took first place in the Second Chance Tournament, defeating Palmer Richardson (9-4).
In the Main Event, Monday had very little trouble getting to the hotseat. Falling to Monday were Jeff Pruitt (7-2), Derek Leonard (7-3), Tony Morrison (7-2), Arnold Hamlett (7-5) and Mike Davis (7-2).
Meanwhile, Davis had a couple of scares after getting a bye in the first round. Chris Vollmar had Davis 4-0 but couldn't put away the hill-hill match, losing 7-6. Next, Davis blew past James Blackburn (7-2) but had plenty of resistance before defeating Michael Fuller (7-6). After his loss to Sam Monday (7-2), Davis shut down Michael Fuller (7-3), pitting Monday and Davis once again in the final.
Although the final match began with Davis winning the lag and making three balls on the break, he was unable to run out. When Monday saw an opening, he ran the last five balls. Davis quickly tied the score in the second rack, however, by kicking the 2-ball in the side pocket and running out.
In the third rack, Davis snookered himself on the 2-ball. He made a good hit, but Monday was out. Davis missed a long shot on the 2-ball in the fourth rack, resulting in another game for Monday. A break-and-run in the fifth rack made it 4-1, Monday.
Davis tied the score at four games apiece with the help of a 3/9 combo, a 2/9 carom and ball-in-hand after a bad hit by Monday.
With ball-in-hand twice in the ninth rack, Davis still couldn't convert – snookering himself and eventually giving Monday an open table.
Playing good and getting rolls, Monday took a 6-4 lead thanks to a jump shot in which the object ball kissed off another into the corner pocket.
Davis had ball-in-hand in the eleventh rack, but a miscue gave Monday another open table. Monday took the next game and then clinched the match with a break-and-run. Final score: 9-4.
Congratulations to cue raffle winner Mike Walker, who was the lucky winner of the Heavy Hitter break cue from Jacoby Custom Cues.
Rock City Promotions wishes to extend special thanks to the staff and ownership of Family Billiards and to OB-1 Cues for supporting the Jacoby Tour.
The next stop on the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour will be January 3-4 at Break Time Billiards in Wilmington, NC. The event will guarantee $1000 added with $1000 for 1st place.
