A field of thirty two strong players came out to Silver Cue Billiards in Woburn, MA for the $3050 in prize money that was up for grabs at the 1st Annual Robert Dionne Memorial Tournament. Top players in the field included Tony Ruberto ,Tom McGonagle, Dave Fernandez, Mike Dechaine, Rich Minichello, Mike Minichello, Dan Simoneau, Dominick Souza, Ed Derk and Chris Leal.
The winners side final was between Tony Ruberto and Tom Mcgongale. This match turned out to be one sided one as Tom would win 9-3 to put Tony on the left side of the bracket.
The one loss side finals was Dave Fernandez vs Tony Ruberto. This match was a dog fight that went neck and neck for 16 games. In the final game, Fernandez scratched on the break and watched Tony run out for the hill-hill win.
The finals was Tony Ruberto vs Tom McGonagle in one race to 15 for the win. This match looked like it was over with Tony taking a commanding 13-7 lead. It looked grim for Tom But he fought back like the champion he is and got the match back to within striking distance at 13-12. That was as close as Tony would let him get though as he won the next 2 games to win the set 15-13 and be crowned the champion.
Ruberto collected $1220 for first, and McGonagle settled for $720. $700 was collected between greens fees and donations. That money will be put into a fund and donated to St. Jude in Robert Dionne's name.
