Bischoff wins ‘two-round’ bout versus Taylor to become Queen of the Mountain
Turns out that the bi-annual King and Queen of the Mountain tournaments at The Clubhouse in Lynchburg, VA (along with the concurrently-run Jack & Jill of the Mountain tournament) are numbered. And named as Royal Weekends, beginning with the first (I) and continuing through to this past weekend’s (Oct. 4-6) Royal Weekend IX at which Scott Roberts and Katie Bischoff became the reigning champions.
Roberts went undefeated to become King of the Mountain in the $1,000-added event that drew 30 entrants to the Clubhouse, while Bischoff came from the loss side to win the $1,000-added Queen of the Mountain tournament which drew 20. Jackie Rivera and Nathan Worley also came from the loss side to take home the top prize in the $500-added Jack & Jill of the Mountain event which drew 27 teams.
Ladies first . . .
Katie Bischoff, who would become Queen of the Mountain for the first time, and Liz Taylor, who won Royal Weekend VII last October, would matchup twice for the title. They would meet first in a winners’ side semifinal and would meet again in a double-hill final.
Bischoff would win her first two matches by an aggregate score of 14-2, shutting out Jane Jennigan in the opening round and giving up two racks to Jackie Rivera before running into Taylor in one of the winners’ side semifinals. Taylor had to battle to get to the same place, beginning with a double-hill win over Courtney Hairfield, and following that up with a 7-5 win over Kelly Wyatt to reach Bischoff. Casey Cork, bound for the hot seat match, got by Buffy Jolie (2), Julia Bright (1) and Kaitlyn Giddens (4) to arrive at the other winners’ side semifinal versus Jordyn Worley.
Taylor downed Bischoff in their first of two, 7-4. Cork sent Worley to the loss side 7-2. Taylor claimed the hot seat 7-4.
Hairfield followed her loss to Taylor with three straight on the loss side, shutting out Leslie Murphy before defeating Theresa Tascarella (2), and Hayley Marion (1) to draw Bischoff. Worley came over and picked up Rivera, who’d followed her loss to Taylor with a shutout over Julia Bright and a 5-3 win over Natasha Collier.
Bischoff and Worley defeated Hairfield and Rivera, both 5-2. Bischoff and Worley locked up in a double-hill quarterfinal that eventually sent Bischoff to the semifinals against Cork.
Bischoff gave up just a single rack to Cork and earned her second shot at Taylor, waiting for her in the hot seat. A somewhat predictable double-hill battle ensued for the title of Queen of the Mountain. Bischoff won it to wear the crown for the first time.
Roberts battles Largen twice to become King of the Mountain
It took Scott Roberts five matches to claim the Royal Weekend’s King of the Mountain title. Two of them were against Scott Largen; winners’ side semifinal and final. Roberts got by Reid Vance 7-2 and Reggie Jackson 7-4 to draw Largen the first time. In the meantime, Nathan Worley defeated Eddie Vondereau 7-4, James Boddy 7-5, and survived a double-hill battle against Ethan Carson to draw Jason Moss in the other winners’ side semifinal.
Roberts got into the hot seat match 7-2 over Largen, while Worley was busy sending Moss to the loss side 7-4. Roberts gave up just a single rack to Worley to claim the hot seat.
On the loss side, Largen picked up Ron Frank, Jr., who’d lost his opening match to James Boddy and then, won five straight by an aggregate score of 25-7 in a run that recently eliminated Dusty Wallace (2) and Daniel Adams (1). Moss drew Jackson, who’d followed his loss to Scott Roberts with a double-hill win over Amory Capers and eliminated Collin Hall 5-3.
Largen and Frank got into a double-hill match that did eventually send Largen to the quarterfinals. Jackson downed Moss 5-2 to join him. Largen defeated Jackson 5-3 in their quarterfinal match and then survived his second, loss-side, double-hill match, defeating Worley in the semifinals.
In an extended, race-to-9 final, Roberts added two racks to the number he’d scored versus Largen the first time. Largen added one to his winners’ side semifinal score. Roberts became King of the Mountain with a 9-3 win over Largen.
Worley and Rivera return from loss to Bischoff and Davis to defeat them in Jack and Jill final
Nathan Worley and Jackie Rivera did have kind of a nursery-rhyme experience on this Royal Weekend. They kind of ‘broke their crown’ and tumbled down together when they lost their winners’ side semifinal match 4-2 against Mike Davis, Jr. and Katie Bischoff, who would advance to defeat Tasha Collier and Bobby Anderson 4-2 to claim the hot seat. Unlike the original, 19th century Jack and Jill rhyme, however, Worley and Rivera got right back up, dusted themselves off and started back up the hill. They won three matches on the loss side, including a double-hill win over Julia Bright and Chuck Cuneo in the quarterfinals and a shutout over the Collier/Anderson team in the semifinals.
The rematch almost went double hill. Ahead by one at 4-3 though, Worley and Rivera reached the top of the Jack and Jill Mountain by winning game 8 to claim that title.
Tour director James Marvin thanked Chris England and his Clubhouse staff along with sponsors Crown Royal, PremierBilliards.com, Diamond Billiards and the Timberlake Motel. In the weekend prior to this coming St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2025, the Royal Weekend (March 14-16) will crown its 10th King, Queen and Jack and Jill team.
