The Cafe 501 Open 2003, a $3,000 dollar added event, drew many of the top German pool-players to Schwetzingen, Germany. Among the favorites for the tournament win were stars like Christian Reimering, Martin Poguntke and reigning world champion Thorsten Hohmann. Out of each of the four groups, which were played in the double elimination system, four players made it to the final day. On the final day the 16 surviving players competed in a single elimination field. The groups only saw minor upsets as Reimering sent Rolf Alex to the bleachers as well as Holger Langlotz beating Helmut Heck.
Fulda based Hohmann, who had suffered a loss against Poguntke in his group, made his way to the semi-final with easy wins on Sunday over Trautmann and Ritter. His opponent in the semi-final was 19-year old Holger Langlotz. To enter the match against Hohmann, he had beaten Hammer and Poguntke, two of the top stars participating in Schwetzingen, with a score of 9-6 and 9-5. The semi-final saw excellent pool from both players. Langlotz was able to keep the match even until the score of 4-4, but thereafter Hohmann left his opponent no makeable shot and entered the final with a 9-4 success. There he met Christian Reimering who had also lost an early match in his group. On the final day, Reimering had already sent Hasch, Belka und Guvenc to the bleachers. In the final he put on a great performance again and jumped out to a quick lead against favourite Hohmann. Later in the match Hohmann was not able to take advantage of some misses by Reimering and therefore Reimering could celebrate a great 9-3 success for the tournament win.
After the tournament Reimering was very happy about having beaten Hohmann in this prestigious final and Langlotz celebrated the greatest succsess in his career so far. At the end of the day all players stated that they liked the friendly atmosphere in Schwetzingen very much and that they would like to participate in next years Cafe 501 Open again.
