Ramon Rodriguez from Lima, Peru won the Second Annual Illinois Open Three-Cushion Billiard Championship held at Chris's Billiards in Chicago Illinois.
The 21 competing players were split into three round robin groups of seven, with the five top players from each division advancing into a seeded single elimination bracket. The top three seeds after the round robin portion of the event were Rodriguez, World Artistic Billiards Champion Roberto Rojas from Mexico City Mexico and top Chicago player Adrian Viguera.
The top seeds advanced through the single elimination bracket down to the semi-final matches where Rodriguez defeated Mazin Shooni 30-9 in 18 innings and Viguera defeated Rojas 30-18 in 25 innings. This left the showdown between local hero Viguera and Peruvian National Champion Rodriguez.
The final match was close with both players averaging better than 1.0, but in the end it was Rodriguez with the 30-27 victory in 27 innings.
Rodriguez won $2000 for the victory, while Viguera settled for $1500 in second place prize money.
The Second Annual Illinois Open Three-Cushion Billiard Championship was sponsored by Gorina cloth and was directed by Deno J. Andrews.
