Smith has recently been seen getting coaching from legendary Mike Sigel, a 3x World Straight Pool Champion. It seemed the lessons paid off. Thanks to Gary Allen of Champion Billiards for hosting the great event.

An enthusiastic NYC field showed up for the Amsterdam World Open Qualifier. Two spots were up for grabs and the 2 tournament favorites were pitted against each other in the first round. In a battle of nerves, as was evident by the final score Holden Chin 100 Jon Smith 98, Holden held fast and won 2 more matches to secure a playoff spot. Jon Smith needed to come back from the loser's side and play an additional 8 hours to secure the second spot. Three players came from out of state, 2 from Long Island and 1 from Brooklyn. One match took 4 hours(!)-these were 100 point games- while the final on the loser side lasted less then 1 hour.            Thanks to Greg Hunt, owner of  Amsterdam Billiards. As usual Amsterdam was the perfect host room making sure the players received the utmost attention.
