Shawn Putnam went through a field of 39 other players to win the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour at Cornfed Red's Billiard Café in Columbus, OH.
Putnam cruised to the hot-seat, which he took with a 7-4 win over Jeff Jones from New York. On his way to the hot-seat Putnam handed losses to some of the touranments top players including a 7-0 win over Dee Adkins and a 7-6 win over Don Wells. Wells had led the match 6-3 but scratched on the break in the 11th rack and Putnam ran out the remainder of the set.
After Jones lost to Putnam for the hot-seat, he took the trip to the one-loss side and lost to Don Wells. After the loss to Putnam, Wells tore through the one-loss side with a vengeance. His combined record going into the match with Jones was 49 wins and 14 losses.
The finals were a match-up between 5-time Viking Tour player of the year Putnam vs Wells who had been tearing up the Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour the last couple weeks. Those days are over for Wells though as his finish in this event eliminated him from playing on the amateur tour.
The final match might have been an indication of both players running out of gas after two days of tough play. It finally went hill-hill before Putnam won the case game.
Putnam earned $1010 with calcutta money, while Wells took home $675. Jones and Fred Lane filled out the top four positions.
