As day one at the 2004 Glass City Open winds down, the biggest story of the day was Fabio Petroni's dominating 10-4 win over deefending champion Johnny Archer. Fabio came out of the gate strong with a 2-0 lead, but Archer fought back to keep it close. The match went from a close one to a blowout when Petroni ran out a rack for a 5-3 lead and then proceeded to break and run the next four racks for a 9-3 lead. A push out after the break by Petroni allowed Archer to win a game and get back to 9-4, but Archer scratched on the next break and Petroni ran out for the win. Petroni will face James Baraks who won the Big Orange Classic just two weeks ago.
Also falling to the one-loss side on day one were Larry Nevel who lost to Ryan McCreesh and reigning US Open Champion Gabe Owen will dropped a hill-hill match to Jeff Hoeksema.
The room has been packed all day, partly due to the many all day passes that were given away by tournament promoters Tom Gearhart and Tom Elder. While the free passes might have cut into the money that Tom and Tom made at the door, the felt it was a fair trade off in order to bring in extra customers for the many vendors on the floor.
Another popular attraction at this event is the 'Challenge The Pro' table set up outside of the tournament floor. Buddy Hall, Keith McCready and Corey Deuel have all taken challenges from anyone willing to pay the $5 fee and have raised over $400 for the Children's Miracle Network.
The media has also been in attendance at this event with local TV Channel 13 and a reported from Sports Illustrated both making appearances on Wednesday.
Brackets are online and updated with most of the matches from Wednesday and Diana Hoppe has already sent us many pics for her online photo gallery.
