The GB9 Southern Masters event was the last to be used to determine which four players would play-off for a spot at the 2013 Partypoker.com World Pool Masters.
Going into this event Daryl Peach was languishing in tenth place which meant that he needed nothing less than first place finish to be even in with a chance. The ‘Dazzler’ showed real grit and determination to win seven straight matches, beating Karl Boyes 11-4 in the final, and secure the 20 points that he needed.
Mark Gray and Karl Boyes were safely through at the top of the rankings but as it turned out Daryl Peach, Phil Burford and Imran Majid all ended up tied on 44 points, which meant that the remaining two places would be determined by rack difference. Following Daryl’s win in the Southern Masters final there was a tense wait as the rankings and statistics were updated with Burford coming out on the highest rack difference securing him the third available spot, and Peach finishing 10 racks ahead of Majid, who was naturally very disappointed.
The random draw pitted Peach against Burford which ended 8-5 to Peach in the winner break format. Boyes saw off Gray 8-3 in super quick fashion.
The final was a repeat of the Southern Masters final played just a couple of hours earlier and Peach continued his super strong form to lock our Boyes with a definitive 8-1 score.
GB9 would like to take this opportunity to wish Daryl all the best in the Partypoker.com World Pool Masters and to thank Matchroom Sports for giving us the opportunity to get involved in selecting one of the players for this prestigious event.
This will be the 21st annual running of the Masters; one of pool’s longest running invitational events and the 12th time it will have taken place in the UK. Previous home winners have been Daryl Peach (1995), Raj Hundal (2005) and Darren Appleton in 2009.
