Clifton, New Jersey- Two time World Champion Thorsten Hohmann got a surprise lashing from relatively unknown throwback player Dave Daya of Pennsylvania. Daya, 57 years old, ran 91 balls on the 29 year old Hohmann at the start of the match. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world's oldest tournament.
The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6,2010 and ends on Columbus Day October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world have arrived on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, www.Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.
Daya ran a 91 before missing, but Hohmann was not able to capitalize on the chance. The final score was 100 to 11 in favor of Daya. The crowd gave the older gentleman a strong round of applause.
"Not too bad for a old man", Daya chuckled.
"Honestly, I didn't like his patterns at all nor his choices. But he was very confident in his playing and he trusted his rhythm and that is a key element in straight pool. He shot well and deserves it", commented Hohmann afterwards. Thorsten is still in good shape in his group to qualify with three more matches to go.
Another notable upset was NYC's Jonathan Smith 100-86 win over last year's runner-up Mika Immonen. Taiwan's Lo Li Wen continues to impress with a solid performance over Dutch champion Nick Van Den Berg 100-52.
Brackets will be hosted by www.azbilliards.com and live streaming of the event at www.accu-stats.com
