Josh Newman had to stop a nine-match winning streak from the one-loss side by Chris Adams to take home the first place prize in the Great Southern Billiard Tour stop on the weekend of October 9-10. The $1,000-added event, sponsored by Nick Varner Cues and Cases, Andy Gilbert Custom Cues and Delta-13 racks, drew 25 entrants to Kylie's Sports Bar and Grill in Cornelius, NC.
Newman got into the hot seat after a 9-3 victory over Chris Turner, and a double hill victory over B. J. Ussery, who'd just sent Cliff Cribb to the one-loss side 9-2. Newman, in the hot seat, awaited the return of Adams.
Following an opening round defeat at the hands of Matt Reed, Adams put three notches on his one-loss side belt, that included victories over two of three brothers in the event, Antonio and Louis Tovar. His fourth notch took care of the last of the three brothers, Jose, whom he defeated 7-2. His fifth one-loss side victory, a 7-2 win over Art Colors, set him up to face Cribb. Turner, in the meantime, faced Reed, who'd defeated Bob Ruffalo 7-1 and Larry Faulk 7-3 to reach him. Adams defeated Cribb 7-3 to get into the quarterfinals versus Turner, who'd downed Reed 7-5.
Adams got into the semifinals versus Ussery with a 7-2 victory over Turner, giving him a 28-9 record over his last four matches. Ussery put up a fight in those semifinals, but Adams prevailed 7-5 to face Newman. Adams took the opening set of the true double elimination final 7-2, but Newman came back to stop his streak at nine, with a 7-3 victory that gave him the first place prize.
