A crowd of people braved the early morning hours to watch Larry Nevel complete his comeback and win the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour stop at Quentin Corner Pocket in Palatine, IL.
Nevel was on a roll all tournament long and was virtually unstoppable except for a span of 6 games at the end of the quarter finals. No opponent had gotten more than four games against Nevel up to the match for the hot-seat and he looked on his way to another lopsided win as he led Marco Marquez 7-4. Marco won three of the next four matches to get back to 8-7 down, and then won the next game to get to hill-hill where he proceeded to snap the 9-ball on the break to send Nevel to the one-loss side.
Nevel eliminated Jimmy Wetch 9-5 to earn the right to face Marquez again. The first set of the true double elimination finals also went hill-hill, but this time it was Nevel winning the case game to force another set. In the second set, Nevel scored a slightly more comfortable 9-6 win over Marquez. The final match ended at 3:00 AM Chicago time, but the room was still full fans watching all the action.
Nevel won $3250 for first, while Marquez settled for $1800 for second. Wetch and Gil Hernandez filled out the top four spots.
The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour also held a tournament at Kennedy's Broadway Billiards in Lorain, Ohio over the weekend. That event was won by Mike Davis who defeated Ronnie Wiseman in the finals. Davis won $650 in prize money, and Wiseman settled for $425. Derek Daniels and Scooter Goodman filled out the top four in that event.
The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour will be at Cornfed Reds Billiards Café in Columbus, Ohio on November 6th for a $2000 added one pocket event and then will hold another $5000 added regional champion at the same room starting on November 8th.
