With another tough field including the likes of multiple tour stop winner Larry “The Truth” Nevel, last event's second place finisher Mike Davis, Jeff Abernathy, Mike Fuller, Adam Pendley and Tour Sponsor Nick Varner, the Great Southern Billiard Tour rolled into Shooters in Greensboro, North Carolina, for its latest season stop over June 21st-22nd, 2008.
The $1500 added guaranteed main event took off with a few surprises in store for the weekend. Iron Mike Davis lost to Adam Pendley 9-7 causing him to be pushed to the one-loss side where he sent home a few players before succumbing to Matt Reed 9-5; and Jeff Abernathy lost to Tony Morrison in round two in a tight match 9-7, followed by a tournament ending loss to Jerry Hilton 9-7.
When Saturday came to a close, the winner's side of the board held two of the tour's top guns, Shannon Daulton matched up against Jeff Pruitt (9-2); and Larry Nevel against Scott Lewis (9-1). After convincing wins in both of their matches, Nevel and Daulton met in the hot-seat match where Nevel forced out Tour Director Daulton 9-6 for the sweet seat.
On Sunday, the one-loss side came alive. Starting the day out Adam Pendley beat Craig Gardner 9-5, Mike Fuller dominatEd Scott Johnson 9-1, Nick Varner conquered Dale Ding 9-1, and Tony Morrison moved on into the brackets past Matt Reed in a close finish 9-7.
From there, the field dwindled as follows:
Pendley d. Fuller 9-6 and Lewis 9-6
Varner d. Morrision 9-5, then lost to Lewis 9-8
Pendley d. Pruitt 9-3, then lost to Daulton in the semi-final round 9-5
The final round started out with a bang as Shannon Daulton looked to be a clear favorite this weekend starting out 9-3; but in this true double elimination final, Nevel reversed the tide in the second set to show a little muscle as he finished yet another weekend on top of the field 9-2.
