For the past three years, the Western Women's Regional Tour have had their August stop at the California Billiard Club in Mountain View, California - the weekend of August 25-26, 2007 was no exception. Although the field was smaller than anticipated, there were many tough players on hand to compete.
With a race to seven format, the first day was a long stretch for those coming back on Sunday. Matches finished up around ten in the evening and included a quarter-final match between sisters Mary Rakin and Michelle Rakin, which sent Mary to the one-loss side.
The final four players made their way back to the venue on Sunday. For the hot seat, WPBA player Lisa D'Atri played previous tour champion Michelle Rakin and was defeated. On the one-loss side, last year's tour winner Jessie Killian and Mary Rakin met up with Killian taking control of the match for the win. These two battles set the stage for a match between Killian and D'Atri, although in the end, Killian shot with a quick tempo and defeated D'Atri handily 7-2. For the finals, Michelle Rankin ended up taking control and beat Jessie Killian with a final score of 7-5.
In addition to the main event, there was a second chance round robin (races to five) that took place. With fourteen games won and one loss, Emilyn Callado took $40 for her efforts, and Deborah Cullen made $20 for her thirteen win, two loss record. Following shortly behind was Deridre Shiozawa with eleven wins, four losses, and Jessica Skye had ten wins and five losses.
The next WWRT stop will be held at the Broken Rack in Emeryville, California on September 22-23, 2007. Please refer to www.wwr9ball.net for more details about the tour and/or matches. In addition to the website, you can also join MySpace group WWR 9-Ball.
Special thanks to the new owners of California Billiards, Ben and Chris, for taking on the tour and for their support.
