Susan Mello came back from the one-loss side to avenge her only loss and win the Arizona Women's Billiards Tour event at Pappy's in Phoenix, Arizona.
Mello was undefeated through Saturday, but had to face Kristen Haney Sunday morning. Haney is one of the most feared bar table players in the valley, and she showed why as she beat Mello 5-2. Haney then faced Madelyn Roberts for the hot-seat. Roberts raced to a 4-1 lead, but that was not enough as Haney came back to win four straight and capture the match 5-4.
As if that loss was not disheartening enough, Roberts then faced Mello on the one-loss side and saw a 3-1 lead turn into a 5-4 loss. This set up the rematch between Mello and Haney for first place where Mello would have to win two matches.
Mello came out strong, as she scored a 5-1 victory in the first set. Mello kept Haney in her chair and ran out when she had the chance, as she won the second and deciding match 5-2 for the tournament victory.
Mello collected $405 for first, while Haney took $275 for second. Roberts and Toni Officer filled out the top four spots.
Tour director Susan Williams won the second chance tournament, with a 3-1 victory over Diana Clayton. Williams was undefeated, with a win over Clayton for the hot-seat and again in the finals.
The AWBT will be at Pockets in Tucson on the last weekend of June for their next event.
