Matches Underway at WCBS Championship

Denis Grabe

On Thursday morning, billiard players from almost all continents began competing for the title of WCBS Champions. The prestigious event co-organized by the WCBS and the Polish Billiards Association brought us the first results.

At first, each win by individual players is counted as three points for the team, a draw – two points and a defeat is counted as one point. Each team consists of four female and four male players.

The intercontinental competition began with a match between Africa & Rest of the World and the Americas. The teams were tied 16:16. The Americans won both 10-ball Pool matches, but they had more problems in the other billiards disciplines. In 3-Cushion both teams scored four points. Africa & Rest of the World won the Snooker competition 5:3. Heyball ended with the same result.

In the European match, the Europe B team proved to be much better in Heyball. In the men’s match, Oliver Szolnoki beat Dennis Laszkowski, and in the women’s match, Ana Gradisnik defeated Nina Torvund. Both teams scored four points in both 3-Cushion and 10-ball Pool. Europe B was better at Snooker and ultimately won the entire competition against Europe A 19:13.

The Asia A vs Asia B match was also interesting. After the 3-Cushion battles the scoreboard showed a tie of 4:4. However, the fantastic performance of the Asia A team in Snooker and Heyball (they won all four matches) was decisive for their victory. The Asia B team was not helped by their wins in Pool 10-ball. The match ended with a score of 18:14.

After 5:00 p.m. the Americas vs. Europe B match started. After almost 2 hours, it ended with the score 19:13 for the European participants. The Americans lost points mainly in Women’s and Men’s Snooker. In Pool 10-ball, the Americans managed to score only three points out of a possible six. 3-Cushion ended in a 4:4 points tie, just like in Heyball.

Finally, we had the match between Europe A and Africa & Rest of the World. This match ended with the result 15:17. They tied in Men’s 3-Cushion and Heyball. Overall Snooker was tied. Europe won in Pool 10-ball: Ayoub Bakhtaoui lost his match against Denis Grabe, and match Marina Jacobs – Sara Rocha were tied.
