Champ Massengil won his first Fast Eddie's Olhausen 9-Ball Tour stop on the weekend of August 21-22, turning aside two attempts by Vernon Richardson to take the prize away from him. The $500-added event drew 30 entrants to Fast Eddie's in Odessa, TX.
From among the winners' side final four, Massengil defeated Shane Harvey 9-7 to get into his first encounter with Richardson, who'd defeated Tito Fernandez 9-5. Massengil was left in the hot seat after a 9-6 victory that sent Richardson to the semifinals.
Over on the one-loss side, Jay Thurmond was winding his way through the field toward that semifinal match against Richardson. He defeated Bob Scholtz in a double hill battle and Rudy Gomez 7-4 to pick up Fernandez. Bill Anderson, in the meantime, moved past Tony Tellez 7-4 and Chance Pritchard 7-3 to face Harvey. Both matches that determined the event's quarterfinalists went double hill; Harvey over Anderson and Thurmond over Fernandez. In what would prove to be his last match of the event, Thurmond defeated Harvey 7-5 and turned to face Richardson.
Richardson dropped Thurmond into third place 7-5 in the semifinals and got his second chance at Massengil. Both were vying for their first win on the Fast Eddie's tour, but when the dust settled, Massengill had won the opening set of the true double elimination final 9-4 and walked off with the first place prize.
