Shane Van Boening won the lag and opened with a break and run. Corey Deuel answered with one of his own. Scored tied at 1-1.
In game 3 Van Boening broke and ran to the 8-ball – then missed an easy shot on it, handing the game over to Deuel, who ran the open layout. The two combatants traded break and runs. Van Boening then won after Deuel broke, and then they once again took turns breaking and running out. So, at this point the score was 4-4, with the only blemish being Van Boening’s miss in game 3.
After their all-world play a mistake fest broke out as the players took repeated turns giving away games until the very end.
It all started when Van Boening missed shape on a routine 2-rail position play, hooked himself, and Deuel ran out. Deuel then missed the 8-ball in game 10 and Van Boening ran out to tie the score at 5-5 at half-time.
In game 11 Van Boening scratched when playing position on his key ball – but Deuel missed the 8-ball and Van Boening took a 6-5 lead. Deuel broke dry and Van Boening ran out. Deuel then blundered on a late rack cluster break and Van Boening ran out to assume a three game lead, 8-5.
In game 14 the pool gods shined on Deuel as his cut break produced an 8-ball on the break. Van Boening missed an easy shot on his key ball in the next game and Deuel ran out to close the gap to a single game. In game 16 Van Boening missed, then Deuel failed to break out his key ball, then missed a bank, and Van Boening ran out to reach the hill leading 9-7.
In game 17 Deuel missed position on the 8-ball, but drilled in a long pressure shot, then broke and ran out to tie the match at 9-9. In the deciding game Van Boening missed a very makeable shot and Deuel ground his way to a run out and a 10-9 victory. Both players are now 1-1 after Day 1.

Jayson Shaw 10 – John Morra 0
Yes,the score above is not misprint. Jayson Shaw has been the hottest player in the world of late, but this is a bit ridiculous. In truth, he did not play his best in this match as he only broke and ran out twice in five attempts, but he did capitalize on Morra’s poor break and a couple of unforced errors.
The turning point may have come when Shaw won the lag because he established the early momentum with a break and run. In game 2 Morra failed to make a ball on the break, scratched, and Shaw ran out again.
After Shaw failed to make a ball on his break, Morra played poor position, missed, and Shaw ran out to take a 3-0 lead. In game 4 Morra came up empty and Shaw ran out, then Jayson broke and ran out to reach the half way point with a 5-0 lead!
In game 6 the pattern continued as Morra broke dry yet again, and Shaw ran out again. In the next rack Shaw missed position, missed a long shot, and Morra played safe – but Shaw pocketed a bank and finished off the run to take a 7-0 lead.
It finally looked like Morra was going to get on the board, but he got a bad break on a late rack cluster break, was snookered, kick and missed, and Shaw polished off the open layout. In game 9 Shaw missed a tough shot, but Morra scratched on a routine position play and Shaw took ball-in-hand and ran four balls and out.
Morra made a ball on the break in game 10 but opened by missing a long combo and Shaw ran to a hook on the key ball. No problem as he kicked the ball 4 plus diamonds down the long rail and in, then fired in the 8-balll to complete his shut out.

Shane Van Boening 10 – Rodney Morris 8
This match may have not been pretty, but it was close, and a lot can be said for that – at least from the fans’ perspective.
After 17 games Van Boening led, 9-8, but he missed a tough cut following a difficult position play and it looked like Morris would run out. But on the ball before the 8-ball Morris, with the hard work behind him, inexplicably missed an easy shot and conceded the last two balls to Van Boening.
On the opening rack Morris missed a cluster break and Van Boening ran out. The next game lasted 6 innings and was won by Morris. At this point the players showed their best form of the match as they traded break and run outs – two each – in the next four games. So after 6 games the match was tied at 3-3.
In game 7 Morris missed a shot when jacked up and Van Boening ran out, and then broke and ran the next game. A foul in game 9 by Morris gave Van Boening ball-in-hand, and he took advantage of it to extend his lead to 3 games.
Morris got ball-in-hand and ran out. Van Boening then won when Morris missed, so after 11 games Van Boening led, 7-4.
In game 12 Van Boening had a golden opportunity to put the match out of reach, but he missed and easy shot and Morris completed a tough runout. Then, in the next game Van Boening missed a very makeable kill shot and Morris ran out to pull to within one game.
Van Boening bounced back with his fourth break and run to pull ahead, 8-6. Morris hung the 8-ball in the next game but Van Boening missed a long tough shot Morris ran out. In the following game Van Boening faces an unrunnable mess and lost – so the score was now tied at 8-8.
In game 17 Morris failed to make a ball on the break and Van Boening ran out to reach the hill with a one game lead. He then escaped with a W when Morris blew that easy shot in the final game.

Darren Appleton 10 - Corey DEUEL 4
Corey Deuel won the lag and proceeded to break and run the first rack. The players traded misses and split the next two games, at which point Deuel led Appleton, 2 games to 1.
Then the Appleton Run Out Machine kicked into high gear as he broke and ran out to tie the score. Deuel did manage to regain the lead, 3-2, with a break and run, but Appleton then executed a super precise run out, tying the match at 3-3.
In game seven Deuel scratched on the break and Appleton ran out for the first service break in the match. He broke and ran, ran out again when Deuel failed to make a ball on the break, then broke and ran out for the fourth time in a row (on his break) and now took a commanding lead of 7-3.
Deuel had a chance to win game 11 but he missed badly on his next to last ball and Appleton quickly cleared the open table. Appleton was faced with a difficult run and in the next rack and he missed. Deuel expertly ran off the balls and now trailed 8-4 in this race to 10.
In game 13 Deuel was stuck with a long shot with the cue ball frozen to the end rail and he missed. Appleton ran out as expected, and then executed his fifth break and run in seven tries to close out the match.
Appleton finished second in the inaugural MIH 8-Ball Invitational in 2012, and won the second edition in 2014. And, based on his super strong play in his first match, it would be hard to bet against him in this year’s event.
