After a great start to the 2016 season at the ‘BWPPA/BWCSA Pool Academy’ at Stoke Mandeville, it was back to one of our favourite venues, as the Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley hosting the 2nd BWPPA event of the season on 14/15 May 2016.
Daniel Lee narrowed the gap at the top of the rankings to Fred Dinsmore, as he won his second event in the last three, with a convincing 7-3 win over Roy Kimberley.
As Dinsmore was the No. 1 seed, he received a first round bye, then had a solid 7-2 win over Danny Luton, to advance to the winners qualifying round where he had a 7-4 win over old rival Aslam Abubaker to reach the semi-finals, where he would face Kimberley.
Kimberley had come through a hard fought game with Tony Southern 7-5, then lost 7-5 to Lee, before coming back through the losers’ side. In an epic game that went this way and that, Kimberley was back to his best as some awesome clearances under pressure gave him the win by the smallest amount possible at 7-6 over a deflated and disappointed Dinsmore.
In the other half of the draw, London’s Lee (following a 1st round bye) had a 7-1 win over Matt Lester, Lee then beat Kimberley 7-2, to reach the semi finals.
In the other semi-final it was the Londoner who beat Abubaker with a 7-3 score line.
So to the final, and it was a repeat of the earlier encounter between Lee, and Birmingham’s Kimberley. Lee won convincingly 7-3.
Although Dinsmore is ahead in the rankings, as it’s a best 4 out of 5 ranking system, only this season’s results count at the end of the season and Lee is currently in a great position provisionally going into event 3.
The Challenge Cup final was won by Southern who beat Nicky Oliver 5-3, Southern ended Matt Lester’s two event winning streak in the semi-final.
Throughout the weekend some of the action was streamed online via Facebook much to the enjoyment of pool fans around the world. We are looking into the possibility of continuing this in the future to give greater exposure of the tour and the high quality of our players. This will benefit not only pool fans worldwide, but also give greater exposure to our sponsors and tour partners.
