The latest site of the amateur only division for the Great Southern Billiard Tour, Weekend's Pub in Goose Creek, South Carolina, reflected a new outcome on the final scene. This past weekend, September 6th-7th, John Stallings and Mike Staubes topped the competitive field to reign in the end. The $1500 added tournament ended on happy notes for not only Stallings and Staubes, but for Jeff Haton as well. One of the fun added bonuses since the addition of the amateur division was that winner of a ticket drawing (for the event entrants) receive one free hour lesson from Tour Director Shannon Daulton at that respective event – Haton was the lucky recipient this go round.
On to the main event – as of Saturday evening, there were twelve players still in the round-up. On Sunday, that field began its break-down to the finals:
Winners Side:John Stallings d. Jared McGee, 8-5
Mike Staubes d. Jeff Haton, 8-5
One-Loss Side:
Glen Smith d. Chris Bailey, 8-7
Bill Allen d. Val Cruz, 8-4
Larry Jackson d. George Buckley, 8-6
Christy Norris d. Darren Blitch, 8-4
The next rounds sent home four players that were just one out of the money in 9th-12th place, Bill Allen was beaten by Joey Ryan 8-4; Brannon Simmons ran into Glen Smith 8-1; Larry Jackson barely missed his chance to move on while playing Billy Sikes 8-7; and Christy Norris fell to Donnie Seagraves, Jr. 8-5.
We saw Joey Ryan at that point proceed to move past Glen Smith 8-5; Jared McGee 8-3; Billy Sikes 8-7; before succumbing to Mike Staubes in the semi-finals. Great run by Ryan! Sikes, prior to loosing on the hill to Ryan, pushed past two very determined competitors Seagraves, Jr. 8-7; and Jeff Haton 8-7. Both matches were nailbiters!
In the finals, Staubes had the daunting task of needing to beat John Stallings twice for the championship spot. But, on this day, Stallings held off his opponent and finished out the weekend as The Charleston Classic Champion with a score of 8-5 to seal the deal.
Special thanks to Herman, Merlin, and all of the staff at Weekends Pub for having the tour stop this past weekend. Last, but not least, thanks to the continuous sponsorships from Nick Varner Cues & Cases, and Masters Chalk.
