Joe Costa Wins Dieckman Memorial at Amazin Billiards

Joe Costa and Mazin Shooni

The 2024 Dieckman Memorial kicked off at Amazin Billiards in Malden, Massachusetts with 18 participants on September 5th. The participants were grouped into three flights of six, with the top two players advancing to a six man round robin finals.

As is with all 3 Cushion USA handicap events, the tournament games are played to the total of the highest rated player. For this event the tournament games were to 38 points, as hometown favorite and room owner Mazin Shooni was the highest rated player in the event.

In the “A” bracket, Joe DeAmato, Joe Costa, and Ray Glennon all went 4-1, the first tie braker is points and Ray Glennon was eliminated, allowing Joe DeAmato and Joe Costa to move into the finals. In the “B” bracket, Mazin Shooni breezed through with a 5-0 record, while Sean Angelesco and Suad Kantaveric both tied for second at 3-2. Based on points Suad was eliminated and Sean moved on with Mazin. The “C” bracket saw George Coucher go 4-1 to win the bracket, and Cleiton Rocha with a 3-2 record win the points tie breaker over Raymond Tower to advance as well.

The six-man round robin was held on Sunday. Unfortunately Sean was unable to participate so this became a five-man round robin. Joe Costa started fast in the first round with a win over George and Mazin was able to put away Cleiton, Joe DeAmato received a first round bye. In the second round Joe D scored a close win over George and Joe C defeated Cleiton with Mazin getting the bye. The next round saw George pull an upset and hand Mazin a close loss 38-35, while Joe C was able to put away Joe D 38- 31, with Cleiton getting the bye. With only one undefeated player left (Joe C) going into round four, Joe Costa had to play Mazin Shooni. Joe would get his bye in the fifth round and with a win would automatically win the tournament, a loss with more than 35 points would also do the trick. Joe and Mazin grinded it out and Mazin ultimately won the match 38-37, giving Joe C a 4-1 record and a guaranteed first place. Mazin went on to beat Joe D in the final round securing his 4-1 record and second place finish.

The order of finish was:

1st Joe Costa
2nd Mazin Shooni
3rd Cleiton Rocha
4th Joe DeAmato
5th George Couture
6th Sean Angelesco
