Van den Berg on his way to the single elimination stage
Wednesday, 05 October 2011: In an intense encounter, Dominic Jentsch (GER) took out Mark Gray (GBR) 8:5 and proceeded to the round of the last 32 players while Gray needs to win another match on the one-loss side.
The course of the match was a bit peculiar. Jentsch went ahead with a clear 4:1 lead when Gray struck back and managed to tie the score at 4:4. It looked like both players would be ready to engage in a tough match but the rest of the match was mainly decided by the break shot. For the racking of the balls, the Ultimate Breakmaster was used, a template that makes sure all balls are frozen when the rack is set up. Jentsch broke and ran the next rack, taking a 5:4 lead over Gray. Then Gray broke and came up dry with his next break shot. Jentsch ran that rack plus another one, being on the hill with 7:4. Then Gray broke and ran all balls, coming closer with 5:7 to Jentsch. But the German youngster played another break-and-run and finished his opponent with 8:5. Gray's only “mistake” was coming up dry on his own break shot in the 10th rack. That shows how high the level of play is at the Beassy™ 8-Ball World's Top Gun.
Other notable results of the winner's qualification round include Ralf Souquet (GER) defeating Jim Chawki (SWE) with 8:4. Bruno Muratore (ITA) overcame Artem Koshovyi (UKR) with 8:5. Nick van den Berg (NED) just crossed the finish line, winning with a margin of 8:7 over Markus Juva (FIN). Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) crushed Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) surprisingly clear with 8:2. Oliver Ortmann (GER) left no chance for Karl Boyes (GBR) and entered the single elimination stage with an 8:3 victory over Boyes.
