Jeff Gregory from Boulder Creek California avenged his only loss and came from the one-loss side to win the USPPA Pro Am Classic at The Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada,
Gregory, a 108 rated player, was undefeated until the final round on Sunday when he dropped an 8-6 decision to Juune Padua who is a 70 rated player. Gregory bounced back with an 8-6 win over Matsu Matsukado Jr and then an 8-4 win over Bill Houck to earn another shot at Padua after Padua dropped a hill-hill match to Larry Mohr for the hot-seat.
Gregory took early control of the rematch with Padua and cruised to an 8-2 win to earn his spot in the true double elimination finals against Larry Mohr (rated 62). Gregory won both sets of the finals 8-7 to take first place in the tournament.
Gregory earned $3,000 for first, with Mohr taking home $1,800 for second place. Padua and Bill Houck filled out the top four spots.
With the pro-am complete, the Reno Open got underway on Tuesday with a field of 192 including such top players as Paul Potier, Charles Bryant, Ismael Paez, Tony Chohan, Danny Basavich, Ronnie Wiseman, Corey Deuel, Jose Parica, Troy Frank, Mike Davis, Jeremy Jones, Rodney Morris, Gabe Owen and Santos Sambajon all competing for the top prize.
With the majority of Tuesday matches complete, there have already been a number of upsets. Paul Potier, Dave Hemmah, Glenn Atwell and Ismael Paez are all on the one-loss side already.
