Thirty Two of the best players in the New England Area descended on RI Billiard Club in North Providence RI over the weekend for another stop on the J. Pechauer New England 9 Ball series. Tony Ruberto, Walter Bryska, Joey Dupuis, Trysten Speedwell, Ken Ludy, Tony Masi, Paul Cormier, Chris Leal, Luis Rios and Tom Mcgonagle were just some of the players in attendance.
In the semi finals, Tony Ruberto took on Dave Fernandez in a match that went neck and neck. The first 10 games went back and forth until Dave made a mistake on a 6 ball and went down 6-5. He recovered and won the next game to make it 6-6. The last game was a dog fight with both players missing shots they ordinarily would never miss but Dave came out on top 7-6 to put him in the finals on the winners side.
In the finals on the winners side, it was Tony Masi vs Dave Fernandez. This match was a very close one that very nearly came down to the end. Dave was down 5-3 and crawled back to tie the score at 5-5. Tony missed a relatively easy ball and opened the door for Dave who took the lead 6-5. The next game Tony had a chance to make the match 6-6, but he boxed an 8 ball in the jaws and left it for Dave who took advantage and won the set 7-6.
The losers side finals was Tony Ruberto vs Tony Masi. Tony Masi started out quick with a 2-0 lead and was on the 9 ball to pull ahead 3-0, but he missed it and it was suddenly 2-1 instead of 3-0. Ruberto never looked back and cruised to a 7-2 victory to set up a rematch with Fernandez in the finals.
The finals was Tony Ruberto vs Dave Fernandez in one single race to 10 games. This match was exactly like the first match between these guys. It went neck and neck for the first 12 games until Tony started to miss balls and Dave capitalized on it to go ahead 7-6. Ruberto then won a game to make it 7-7, but missed an easy one ball in the next rack to let Dave run out to go ahead 8-7. Ruberto made a crucial mistake on the 5 ball in the next rack and Dave got out to make the score 9-7. Dave then put the icing on the cake as he ran out the next game to take a 10-7 win and his second victory of the Season.
