Thriller ends with a heart breaking final
Friday, 17 August 2012: In an epic thriller, Niels Feijen (NED) came out on top of Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 8:7.
Both players are fairly known on the European pool scene. Jungo was the winner of last year’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open and came here to defend his title. But Feijen obviously had another idea in his mind. Both players started on a very high level and the quality of the match was good enough for a teaching DVD. The first half of the match was determined by strong safety play of both contestants. Sometimes Lady Luck helped, but that was even between the two of them. In the early stage, Jungo seemed to have the better break. But he could not turn that into points. Feijen either played better safety shots or Jungo was not having a good shot at his first object ball. In the 8th rack, Feijen had two balls down and ran the rack, taking a 5:3 lead over Jungo. Then Jungo had the break shot. He came out dry and left Feijen an open table which the Dutch cleared to gain a 6:3 advantage over Jungo. Then Jungo took a time-out and tried to change the course of the match.
And he did. Feijen came up dry on his break shot and left an open table for Jungo which he cleared. Then Jungo broke and forced Feijen to play a foul shot. Jungo ran the next rack, trailing only 5:6. The tension was very high at that point in time. In the 12th rack, Feijen broke the balls and had one ball down. He tried a bank shot but he failed. Feijen left a tough but makeable shot for Jungo. Instead of making the ball and tying the match at 6:6, Jungo missed it and allowed Feijen to get on the hill, taking a 7:5 lead. What a drama! What an error from Jungo! Jungo needed a good and lucky break in the 13th rack. He had a ball down, and the layout was very promising for him. Jungo played until he came to the 7-ball. As a shock for all spectators, Jungo missed the 7- ball, leaving only four balls on the table for Feijen. “That was it!”, everybody thought, but Feijen showed nerves and played a bad position for the 8-ball and missed it. Jungo won the rack and the next one and now the match was a hill-hill thriller at 7:7. Jungo broke the 15th rack. Two balls went down and all balls were playable. But he ran out of position for the 4-ball. He tried to fire it in but he missed it and left the balls for Feijen. “The Terminator” ran the remaining balls on the table and took the match with 8:7.
Other notable results from the round of the final 32 players include Oliver Ortmann (GER) defeating Fabio Petroni (ITA) with 8:7. Albin Ouschan (AUT) remained victorious over Chris Melling (GBR) with 8:3. Ralf Souquet (GER) sent compatriot Nicolas Ottermann (GER) home with 8:4. Dominic Jentsch (GER) creamed Ivar Saris (NED) 8:1. Radoslaw Babica (POL) overcame Nick van den Berg (NED) with 8:5.
Tomorrow, the men’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open will continue at 10:00 CET with the matches of the last 16 players. At 09:00 CET, the women’s Dynamic Billiard Germany Open will begin. 32 women from all over Europe will take their chance to win the title.
