Queens, New York- Only 8 players remain for the title of World Tournament of 14.1 Champion. Europe has 4 barrels left while USA has 3. And of course, there is always still Efren. The winner of the event will have his name inscribed on the 14.1 Trophy that has listed players starting from 1912 until now 100 years later.
An American player has not won the event since its 2006 revival, with Bobby Hunter's 1990 win being the final time the USA has held the Gold.
World 9-Ball Champ Darren Appleton of England eliminating Jordan's Zaid Thweib 200-101, even after Darren received a 15 point deduction when the score was close the first half of the match. Darren lost his cool momentarily and slammed the balls onto the table after an unlucky scratch. He took a restroom break and came back under control to win.
Johnny Archer took on the task of trying to beat Earl Strickland a second time in the same event. In a tight match Archer pulled away after Earl missed a breakshot at 131.
"This was a reall great event. If I would've made that break shot I I had a chance.", said a very sportsman like Earl.
"The World Tournament of 14.1 just seems to bring the best out of a player's personality. Even the most competitive ones", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions who has put on the event seven straight years.
The most tightly contended match was Stephan Cohen and Shaun Wilkie's match. Wilkie led the match to the end until Cohen kept cooler under fire to inch through 200-181.
Efren Reyes won surprisingly easy over tough Immonen. He enters his first quarters here at the World Tournament. "It is an easy game, but that's what makes me feel more pressure! I feel that I can win now if I get some luck", said Reyes smiling in his usual humble manner. He will face a rematch from the round robin with Corey Deuel representing USA.
