On day 9 of the European Billiards Championships in Brandenburg/Germany the medal winners in Artistic-Billiards were found. In this spectacular discipline which requires a high degree of skill and accuracy, the Belgian Eric Daelman prevailed against the competition and celebrated his first European title. In the final he defeated the reigning world champion Serdar Gümüs from Turkey by 3:1-sets.
With the same result Daelman previously defeated his compatriot Walter Bax, while Gümüs had to go over the full distance to beat Frenchman Jean Reverchon. The two Germans Thomas Ahrens and Bernd Singer dropped out in the quarterfinals. Ahrens was very disappointed about his fifth place as he had to accept a one-point deficit in the final set against Reverchon.
In the 3-Cushions Team-competition the German duo Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph has been eliminated by Netherlands A. Still in the medal-race is the reigning world champion Belgium B who had the upper-hand against Turkey. Greece and so called Belgium A are the third and fourth team in the upcoming semifinals.
Furthermore the quarterfinalists in the 3-Cushions club-team event on the small tables are fixed. The Egyptians from the Maadi Sporting Club had no problems to reach the final eight as well as Andernos from France. The quarterfinal will be played on Sunday which is the last day of this year’s European Billiards Championships.
On this Saturday the last discipline has also been started. In the Men’s division, Cadre 71/2, the 24 participants are divided in eight groups with only the first place winner to qualify for the quarterfinals. Defending champion is the Spaniard Esteve Mata who won his first game by 200:2-points against the Czech Otakar Truska. Vice-Champion Marek Faus (Czech Republic) has lost his first match against Austrians Arnim Kahofer and needs some kind of a miracle to get a spot in the final 8.
