Wilson Dorsey, late of Milwaukee, WI and since last June, a resident of North Carolina, signed on to compete in what (based on our records) was his first ‘win money’ event, below the storied Mason-Dixon Line (basically, the southern border of Pennsylvania). He’d competed and cashed in an event in Las Vegas back in 2019, but Vegas is technically above that imaginary line.
Seems as though the geographic and meteorological relocation may be working out well for him, because he’s just won an event on the PremierBilliards.com’s Q City 9-Ball Tour at a stop in New Bern, NC this past weekend (Jan. 13-14). It’s Dorsey’s first recorded cash finish anywhere since 2019 and his first (recorded with us) win, anywhere, at any time, as well.
As of this past weekend, Glenn Weatherly has recorded four cash finishes with us here at AZBilliards; all on the Q City 9-Ball Tour, and in three out of those four events, he finished as runner-up, including this most recent event in New Bern. The $250-added event drew 32 entrants to Mickey Milligan’s, where Weatherly had recorded his two previous runner-up finishes.
Dorsey and Weatherly met three times in New Bern; winners’ side semifinal, and two sets of a double-elimination final. Dorsey took two out of three of those matches, including the second set of the final to capture the event title.
Dorsey, racing to 8 throughout the event, made it to his winners’ side semifinal matchup against Weatherly with an aggregate game score of 24-3, giving up a single rack to each of his first three opponents – Justin Outlaw, Tanner Jackson and CB Brown. Weatherly, in the meantime (racing to 5), gave up one rack to Carter Corley and three each to Kaitlin Ward and Eddie Almonte.
From the other end of the bracket, Justin Knuckles (racing to 7) gave up four each to Tim Sellman and Pop Newitski (double hill) before giving up three to Bill Chase. Knuckles drew Chris Sparrow in the other winners’ side semifinal.
Dorsey won his first match against Weatherly 8-2, as Knuckles advanced to the hot seat match with a 7-2 win over Sparrow. Dorsey claimed the hot seat 8-3 and waited patiently (one presumes) for Weatherly’s return.
Weatherly opened up his loss-side trip against Damien Brads, who’d been shut out in his opening round against CB Brown and went on a four-match winning streak that had just eliminated Crystal Sparrow (Chris Sparrow’s wife) by shutout and John Higgins 7-2. Chris Sparrow picked up Danny Todd, who’d lost his second-round match to Crystal Sparrow and went on a four-match winning streak, three of which went double hill versus Jordan Oak, CB Brown and Eddie Almonte.
Weatherly got into the quarterfinals 5-5 over Brads, who was racing to 7. Chris Sparrow joined him after a 5-3 win over Todd. Weatherly downed Sparrow 5-2 in those quarterfinals and with two ‘beads on the wire’ in a race to 7 against Knuckles in the semifinals, defeated him 5-5 for a second, and if he wanted to win, third shot against Dorsey in the finals.
Weatherly came into the true, double-elimination final with three ‘beads on the wire’ in what would have to be two races to 8 against Dorsey to claim the event title. He didn’t need the three ‘beads’ in the opening set, winning it 5-4. He could have used them, and two more, in the second set. Dorsey got out in front and stayed there to win the second set 8-3 and claim the event title.
Tour director Herman Parker thanked the ownership and staff at Mickey Milligan’s for their hospitality, along with title sponsor PremierBilliards.com, BarPoolTables.net (Randy Tate), TKO Custom Cues and Realty One Group results (Kirk Overcash), Dirty South Grind Apparel (Angela Harlan-Parker), Federal Savings Bank (Alex Narod), CHC Underground (Chris Clary) and AZBilliards.
Although Parker shared information about the next stop on the tour, he did so while expressing some mild concern about his environmental situation.
“I’ve got over a foot of snow here (in the West Virginia mountains),” he explained. “I can’t get out of my house.”
“The next stop on the PremierBilliards.com’s Q City 9-Ball Tour,” he went on to assure us, “scheduled for this weekend (Jan. 20-21), will be a $500-added event (based on a full field of 32), to be hosted by Breaktime Billiards in Cary, NC.”
