Once again Escape Pool Bar in Barnsley played host to the Tiger Cues Warrington British Wheelchair 10-ball Championship. Now in it’s eighth year, for the first time in BWPPA history this event was the penultimate of the season. At this stage of the season, it is always interesting as players begin to jostle for position in the end of season rankings.
In the early stages there were no real surprises. As the tournament progressed however there was some outstanding performances. “Hot Wheels” Frankie Gillen played some terrific pool to win two hill-hill matches back to back. The first a 6-5 win over Gary Swift and, in what could be considered as the shock of the tournament a 6-5 win over Tony Southern.
Elsewhere, BWPPA no.1 Daniel Lee began strongly with a 7-4 win over Danny Luton, and another 7-4 win over the English 8-ball World Champion Dave Beaumont. Roy Kimberley felt the full force of the talent on this tour. “The Sandman’s” first match was a 7-4 victory over Tony Southern, waiting for him next was World 9-ball Champion Fred Dinsmore, fresh from his 7-3 win over Swift. Kimberley took the match 7-3, to progress to the semi-finals.
Into the second day, Beaumont progressed into the semi-finals with a 6-0 win over Gillen. On the opposite side of the draw Dinsmore beat Danny Luton 6-4, to advance to the semi-finals to face Lee. Kimberley came up Beaumont in the semi-finals. This time it was to be the English 8-ball World Champion Beaumont who came through a 7-4 winner, to advance to his second Main Event final of the season. In the other semi-final, it was the World 9-ball Champion Dinsmore who took the hill-hill battle with Daniel Lee 7-6.
After a weekend of excellent pool, the final came down to a battle of the World Champions and a repeat of the last event in Barnsley. Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore, who won the World 9-ball title last November in Finland, and Dave Beaumont, the 2018 English 8-ball World Champion. A title he won, just 3 months ago in Blackpool. The match went all the way to a deciding 13th rack. In the end it was Dinsmore who cleared up to take the title.
Going into the Predator Cues British 9-ball Championship at Aylesbury, in November there are at least four players who could end the season as the UK no.1 wheelchair player, and claim the beautiful Ikon cue from our great sponsors Predator cues.
A video of the main event final is available to watch here. Pictures of the event can be found here in the BWPPA gallery.
The latest BWPPA ranking list can be found here.
In the final of the Challenge Cup, sponsored by the World Pool Series, Tony Southern beat Danny Luton 5-3. With just one event left, there are at least three players who could end the season as the Challenge Cup no.1.
Our last event of the year is the Predator Cues British Wheelchair 9-ball Championship on 3-4th November at the Wheelchair Cuesports Academy, Stoke Mandeville Stadium Aylesbury.
