Day One is complete at the 25th Annual Derby City Classic at the Caesers Horseshoe Casino in Elizabeth, Indiana.
The theme of day one was Short Rack Banks and Bigfoot 10-Ball. The open Banks event was able to complete the first round of play and the original field of 480 players was whittled down to 376 players. Round two was being played on Friday night and Saturday morning.
The Bigfoot 10-Ball Challenge, taking place on the Diamond 10′ table in the Accu-Stats arena saw action from the top half of the sixteen player bracket.
John Morra and Jesus Atencio kicked things off and both players struggled to get much of anything going on the big 10 foot monster. It was going to come down to who could get comfortable on the table first, and that player was Morra, as he scored a 10-6 win.
Next up was Joshua “The Killer” Filler and Mieszko Fortunski. The difference in this one was the break, as Fortunski struggled to make anything on multiple breaks. The match ended with a 10-8 scoreline for Filler, and Fortunski had to go away feeling that a ball on the break once or twice would have led to a comfortable win for him.
Match three of the day was in front of a packed crowd as the pool gods gave them Fedor Gorst vs Jayson Shaw in a match that could have easily been the finals of the event. This one went back and forth, as expected, with Gorst scoring the 10-7 win.
The final match of the night was Poland’s Wiktor Zielinski taking on “The Prince of Pool” Corey Deuel. Deuel, never one to shy away from doing things unconventionally, broke the entire match with the mechanical bridge. It didn’t seem to help, with Deuel failing to make a ball numerous times. Zielinski played his usual steady style and controlled the match for the duration. Final score was 10-5 Zielinski.
Day two will see more Bank Pool action on the outer tables, and four more matches on the Bigfoot 10 footer. Matches scheduled in the Accu-Stats arena are…
1:00 pm – Max Eberle v Alex Pagulayan
3:30 pm – Konrad Juszczyszyn v Naoyuki Oi
7:00 pm – Shane Van Boening v Lee Vann Corteza
9:30 pm – Max Adams v Roberto Gomez
