The reception that players and spectators gave last year's event has convinced promoters Jack Colavita and Bill Haley to double the size of the field to 32 players and close Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ to the public for the weekend of October 3rd, 4th and 5th this year to better showcase the quality field that is being assembled.
Joining last year's Champion, Ed Hodan and Runner-up, Steve Lipsky, will be a stellar field that far surpasses what you would expect of a "normal" State Championship Tournament. Players that have committed to the event include: Allen Hopkins, Dallas West, Bobby Hunter, Grady Mathews, Jack Colavita, Don Polo, Tony Robles, George SanSouci, Danny Barouty, Bob Maidhof, Steve Lillis, Teddy Garrahan and Carmen Lombardo. Earl Strickland, Jimmy Fusco, and Jose Garcia are invited but not yet confirmed.
There will be several qualifiers being held to fill additional slots. Comet Billiards will be holding one August 16th and 17th and Drexeline Billiards in the Philadelphia area has one slated for September 13th and 14th. Spectators will be treated to a double elimination tournament with races to 150 balls and a single 200 ball final match that will have the Champion collecting $3,000+ for besting the field.
Spectators will have the opportunity to buy raffle tickets on several prizes including a Richard Black custom cue, a Bobby Hunter custom cue and several other items. Spectator tickets will be $12 per day or $30 for the three day event. If you love straight pool, call Comet Billiards at 973-334-7429 for more information.
