Stop #6 of the Mezz LA 9 Ball Series at Good Times Billiards started out with a tough field of SoCal pool players, with Paul Vinas (604) winning BACK TO BACK stops! Paul had a great run, defeating Nico Scalise (616) hill-hill in a single race final after capturing the hot seat. This is Paul’s second win in the series, following his victory at Stop #5 last month!
Paul started the tournament out very strong, defeating San Diego’s own Tim Traver (565) in the first round, followed by 3 close 7-5 wins over Butch Barba (608), Season 3 Opener Champion Joseph Leon (593), and our newest player, Nico Scalise. In round 5, he fared a bit better and defeated Terrence Lee (581) to capture the hot seat.
Nico came into this tournament not familiar with the field, venue, or format, but still managed to stay focused and defeat some great players himself. In round 1, he came out the gate strong, taking down Derrick Cabrera (592) 7-0, and followed it up with another heavy victory over Isaac Pineda (549). He went on to defeat the LBC’s Jeff Schaum (499) before taking a loss to Paul Vinas in round 4. This brought him to the one-loss side against Butch Barba, who was coming off 3 straight wins. After defeating Butch, Nico went on to beat Francis Lanag (609) and Terrence Lee, which took him to the final against Paul.
Stop #7 (the Break & Run Derby) is Sunday, July 7th! More info on this unique format coming soon. Entries will go on sale at 9am on June 23rd. Be ready to purchase those entries – they are selling out faster and faster every month. It’s essentially anyone’s tournament to win – don’t miss out!
