Shane McMinn went undefeated to win the One-Pocket Event of the Midwest 9-Ball Tour's stop, held from October 28-30. The $1,000-added One Pocket event drew 50 entrants to Shooter's in Olathe, KS. On Friday night, the event launched a concurrently run, $4000-added 9-Ball tournament, which drew 98 competitors, and was ongoing at the conclusion of the One-Pocket event.
McMinn had to defeat Chip Compton twice to win the One-Pocket event. He did so first among the winners' side final eight, defeating Compton 3-1 and turning to face Dan Olson. Beau Runningen, in the meantime, squared off against Joey Gray. Mc Minn and Runningen got into the hot seat match with 3-1 victories over Olson and Gray. McMinn hung on to gain the hot seat in a double hill victory versus Runningen, and waited for Compton to conclude a five-match winning streak in the left bracket.
Compton began that streak with a shutout over Jason Wilderman, and followed it with a 3-1 victory over Nicky Brandt, which set him up to face Gray. James Davis, Jr., in the meantime, defeated Dan Tull 3-1 and survived a double hill battle against Gary Lutman to face Olson. Davis then shutout Olson and moved into the quarterfinals against Compton, who'd downed Gray 3-1. Compton defeated Davis 3-1 and then shutout Runningen in the semifinals.
Compton and McMinn battled to double hill in the opening set of what would have been a true double elimination final. McMinn, though, won the deciding game of the set to claim the first place, $800 prize.
Compton and McMinn were among the 16 remaining players in the winners' bracket of the 9-Ball tournament, late Saturday night. They, along with eight on the one-loss side, were scheduled to return to action on Sunday.
