Willie Oney went undefeated through a field of 22 entrants to take first place in the season opener of the Dishaw Custom Cues Central New York (CNY) tour on Saturday, September 25. The event was hosted Cap's Cue Club in Syracuse, NY.
After victories over Nick Vrucado, Larry Homer, and Hendrick Drost, Oney gained the hot seat with two straight shutouts; first, against Jason Reese and then, versus Fitz Conti, Jr., who'd sent Mike Renshaw west 8-5. Though it would be Conti, Jr. returning to challenge Oney, it was not without a strong one-loss side challenge on the part of Jay Brotherton, who came within a match of reaching the finals.
It was Brotherton who was waiting for Renshaw on the one-loss side, following victories over Jay Dusky 7-5 and Drost 7-3. Reese picked up Brian Lipes, who'd advanced past Dominick Martoccia in a double hill battle and Mark Creamer 7-5. Brotherton then survived a double hill battle versus Renshaw to get into the quarterfinals against Lipes, who'd defeated Reese 7-3.
Brotherton defeated Lipes in those quarterfinals 7-3. His run through the west bracket ended with an 8-4 victory by Conti, Jr. in the semifinals that followed. Oney then completed his undefeated run with an 8-4 win in the finals.
