David Guttierez, still the only player to ever win three straight stops on the Fast Eddie's Olhausen 9-Ball Tour, returned to his winning ways on the weekend of September 19-20.
Though tested among the winners' side final four twice and in the true double elimination final, he went on to defeat Deo Mark twice and take home the first place prize for his fifth victory overall on the tour. The $1000-added event drew 53 entrants to Fast Eddie's San Antonio Embassy Oaks room.
Guttierez' first test came in the person of Andy Jethwa, who'd won the tour's last stop in August. The two battled to double hill among the winners' side final four, before Guttierez prevailed and moved into the hot seat match. Mark, in the meantime, was sending Bill Fuller west 9-7. Guttierez hung on in his second straight hill-hill battle, sending Mark to the semifinals, from where he'd return to give Guttierez a run for his money two more times.
Over on the one-loss side, Adam King, who'd gotten by both Tom Giddings and Mickey Wonicki 7-5, was waiting for Jethwa. Eduardo Ramirez, who'd defeated both Tim Lewis and Roland Martinez 7-4 was in the wings for Fuller. Jethwa squeaked by King 7-6 and met Fuller in the quarterfinals, after Fuller had dropped Ramirez into the tie for fifth place 7-5.
Jethwa advanced into the semifinals with a 7-5 win over Fuller and then ran head on into Mark, anxious for a second shot at Guttierez. He got his chance with a 7-4 win over Jethwa and the true double elimination final was on. Momentum helped, as Mark forced a second set with a commanding 9-3 win in the opener. Guttierez fought back in the second set, winning it 7-5 to take home the first place prize.
