Packing a mighty punch, the smaller than anticipated field at the latest Carolina Ladies J. Pechauer Tour stop was not lacking in the least in talent. In attendance at Grady's in Lexington, South Carolina, on November 22nd-23rd, were WPBA players Belinda Calhoun and Rachel Abbink, plus other top names such as Rachel Eliazer, Christy Norris, and Katie Cowan.
This event ended with young Katie Cowan on top. Cowan's only loss came along within the hot-seat match in the form of Belinda Calhoun 9-4, but that did not stop her in her tracks. Christy Norris, meanwhile, was working her way through the one-loss side to which she eventually found herself in the semis with Cowan.
In the semi-finals, Norris looked to be the eventual winner as she held the lead at one time 6-4 in a race to seven, but Cowan rallied back in the nail biter set and forced her way into the final round to attempt to avenge her earlier loss from Calhoun by taking down Norris 7-6.
The finals saw a different Cowan than in the hot-seat match playing Calhoun. The first set was another close ending at 9-7 forcing a second in this true double elimination event. The second set ended exactly the same with a two game deficit 7-5. Congrats to all of the ladies in attendance and to Katie Cowan for digging in her heels.
Special thanks to Grady Mathews for hosting the event at his establishment and to the staff for catering to the players. Also, to the tour sponsors for helping to make it possible, J.Pechauer Cues, Strok-In-Style, RST2 International, AZBilliards.com, and Poison Billiards.
The tour will continue its season at The Crooked Cue in Waynesville, North Carolina, on December 6-7, 2008 ($500 added). Registration will begin at 11 am with the player's meeting to follow.
