The Old Williams Billiards Memorial Classic Open 9-Ball Tournament took place August 22nd-24th at Carolina Billiards in Wilson, North Carolina. This event was the first held of its kind by room owner Bill Houston and it is anticipated to be a bi-annual tournament with a projected scheduling again in the spring of 2009. Houston hopes to expand and improve the event in the future based on the experience gained during the inaugural tournament. Good luck to you Bill!
This weekend's field of twenty-two players drew some of the area's top names including Wade Crane, Sam Monday, and Tommy Briscoe. But, it would be Steve Page who topped the field and was deemed the first champion of the Old Williams Billiards Memorial Classic Open 9-Ball Tournament.
Page handed Sidney “Champ” Champion his first loss in the hot-seat match by a small margin of only a couple of games and waited patiently for his chance to seal the deal in the final round. On the one-loss side, Sam Monday ended David Eatmon's tournament life in the quarters and then suffered the same fate in the semis against Champion. In the true double elimination final, Page held on to score a nail biter ending and the title by a final set score of 9-7.
If you are in the area of Wilson, North Carolina, the room offers two weekly events of interest. There is a Thursday night nine-ball tournament that begins at 7:30 p.m. and costs a mere $10; and on Sunday's the players turn their attention to eight ball – start time and entry fee are the same. For more information on these or future events at this venue, call (252) 243-5316.
