The gentlemen of the game of nine ball came out early morning on November 3rd for the North Carolina Senior 9-Ball Open. The tournament was held at Babineau's Billiards in Raleigh, North Carolina. This $500 added event held by owner Paul Babineau for the fourth year in a row, brought out a quality field of twenty-four players – thirteen of the twenty-four were all over sixty years young.
Some of the top players that made it into Babineau's included Frank Tullos of Winston/Salem, Larry Faulk of Wilmington, Cary Dunn of Virginia, Younger Chapman, and Arnold Hamlett.
The competition was intense, but these gentlemen have experienced the sport for a long period of time and have grown to enjoy the game and challenge of it all like fine wine. It was relayed that almost all of the matches went hill-hill proving the experience in the room was concentrated. When the activities came to a grinding halt, there was one man that stood – Younger Chapman. Chapman is the only repeat winner of this annual event in which he has managed to secure the title of North Carolina Senior 9-Ball Open Champion for two out of the four years it has been held. Following shortly behind Chapman was second place finisher Larry Faulk, third place Jimmy Faircloth, and fourth place went to Arnold Hamlett.
Not only did Hamlett stake his claim as fourth place finisher, but he also took top honors in the sixty year old and older category as the highest finisher in a separate in-house tournament. With this win, Hamlett took home an additional $300 for his efforts and the second place finisher Barry Cooper secured $140.
