Metzenger wins NWPA qualifier

It was another case of a little luck and a lot of help from a member, but we found another great venue to hold a NWPA event. Liz Cole was instrumental in setting up our first tournament in the Portland area when she got Break Time Billiards in Tigard to host not only a $500.00 added tourney, but make it a qualifier for a 2006 WPBA event as well. The room is the prototype pool room with top of the line equipment and playing conditions. They even have a bar in the back serving beer and wine. (Thank God).

The owners, Kevin and Shannon Parr went out of their way to make us feel at home, which was hard since we had players from all over Washington, Oregon, and even Idaho and Canada.

At the players meeting we discussed the final tour stop to be played on November 19th and 20th at the new Uncle Jack's Billiards and Lounge in Lynnwood, Wa. (Formerly The Breaking Point). They are adding a good deal more money than normal and are working on getting a sponsor for the second chance tournament. This is also our season ending banquet, where we give out awards and have a free catered dinner for all NWPA members. Everyone enjoyed last years food from the well known Buca Di Beppo's so much that they will give us an encore. Guests also can join us for dinner by paying $10.00. Check out NWPAtour.com for all the details.

But with a $1,200.00 total purse and the tour ranking so close, it was the tournament that was the exciting part. Cathy Metzenger from Calgary was first to the point, by winning against Cindy Doty 7-3, Linda Dick 7-2, and Kim Hole (nee Gates) 7-6. The tougher road to the point was the one Kit Dennis took by beating Kathleen Meckler 7-2, Tamre Rogers 7-2, Kerry Impson 7-5, and Deby Welfringer 7-5. In the finals, she then proved her strong showing at Jillian's was no fluke by beating Cathy 7-2.

Kerry Impson came through the B side with wins over Kim Hole 7-1 and Deby W. 7-5, but getting to the finals was halted by Cathy 7-3.

In the final match, Cathy, who was trying to qualify for another WPBA event (having played in four already), got her revenge against Kit, winning 9-2. The quality of play top to bottom was as good as I've seen this year, and I'm looking forward to the year end tourney in November. There are four or five players within reach of being ranked #1 and being invited on the 2006 WPBA tour, so it should be nerve racking.

We'll see you there for the inaugural tournament at Uncle Jack's in Lynnwood.
