Day one at the World 10-Ball Championship looked like it would be complete with no real upsets, until late in the evening.
The event kicked off at 10am Manila time and included a ceremonial first break by Philippine Vice President Noli de Castro.
Play throughout the day included very few surprises as the top seeds appeared to be advancing with little difficulty. #1 seed Daryl Peach made quick work of Hong Kong's Sit Shun Ching 9-4 and looks to be a lock to qualify for the final 64. USA's Charlie Williams made even quicker work of Raj Hundal in a 9-3 match. Williams will next face Filipino Elmer Kalaquian.
Fourteen year old Wang Can, who earned his place in the main event based on his performance in the qualifiers, discovered first hand how tough the play is in the main event. His first round match was against Taipei's Shing-Shun Yang and Can rarely left his chair in a 9-1 match.
Canada's Edwin Montal lost a tough match to German Christian Weigoni. Montal led the match 5-1, but could not hold off a charge from Weigoni and lost 9-6.
American Shane Van Boening looked good in his first match against African Alphonse Hoge and won 9-1.
#3 seed Niels Feijen defeated India's Dharminder Singh Lilly in a 9-5 match that saw Feijen in complete control.
Marcus Chamat was also in complete control in his 9-3 win over Filipino Antonio Gabica.
The 6:00 rounds saw the first real upsets as Farhad Shaverdi from Iran defeated German Thomas Engert 9-7. Engert will face Oscar Dominguez on Tuesday with hopes of staving off elimination.
Next to fall was American Corey Deuel, who dropped a hill-hill decision against Roman Hybler. Deuel will face reigning Women's World Champion Yuan-chun Lin in the next round. Lin lost a sloppy match against Jasmin Ouschan on the TV table Monday night.
The upsets just kept coming as American Johnny Archer looked very uncomfortable in a 9-5 loss to Martin Kempter. Archer will face American Max Eberle on Wednesday. Eberle lost a 9-7 match to Filipino Jeffrey De Luna on Monday night that saw Eberle leading early, but De Luna came back to the delight of the Filipino fans.
Play begins at 11:00 am on Tuesday and we will see our first eliminations in the day two matches.
