The California Billiard Club in Mountain View, California hosted a $2,500-added buy-back tournament this past weekend and enjoyed a 108-player turnout. This format, refined by Bob Jewett, offers a series of 8-man qualifier tournaments whereby a player may put up anther entry fee to enter another qualifier should he fail in his first qualifying attempt. Some unfortunate cueists entered as many as five qualifiers without ever advancing to the final double-elimination chart!
At the end of the main event Rafael Martinez faced off against Santos Sambajon for the right to own the $1,500 first prize. Martinez was in his priome this day and ran out quickly to a 5-2 lead over Sambajon that Sambajon attempted and failed to cover as Martinez won the final match and the title with a 6-4 win over Sambajon.
