The Maryland Open 2009 14.1 Straight Pool Championship is just a week away with a total prize fund of $13,400 up for grabs. Slated for June 27-28, 2009 at Big Daddy's Billiards (7954 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie, Maryland) owners Richard and Cynthia Molineiro will host straight pool enthusiasts for the second year in a row.
In the past few years, the best of the best in the 14.1 arena have made their way to participate in the event including such names as Danny Barouty (2008 second place finisher), Steve Lipsky, Grady Mathews, Thorsten Hohmann, WPBA superstar Jeanette Lee, Drexeline Billiards owner and defending 2008 Champ Bob Maidhof, Mika Immonen, and the list continues to grow each year. Included in the mix this time around, Mike Davis, Danny Harriman, Bobby Hunter, George “Ginky” SanSouci, Ed Hodan, Shaun Wilkie, and recent 2009 World Summit of Pool Champ Mike Dechaine.
This year, the player's meeting and practice begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday. As has been the case in the past, a dress code will be enforced throughout the event so come dressed to impress. The format is set to hold a forty player round-robin on Saturday, eight flights, five players each, four matches to 100 points. The top two from each flight will advance into the Sunday rounds. On Sunday morning the winners from Saturday will be seeded (1-8; 2-7; 3-6; and 4-5) with second place finishers receiving a blind draw. The final sixteen player round-robin will run four flights of four players each, playing three matches to 125 points. The four flight winners play single elimination on Sunday evening with seed one versus four and two to 150 points.
The prize fund is anticipated to payout as follows:
1st $4000
2nd $2400
3rd $1100
4th $700
5th-8th $600
9th-12th $400
13th-16th $250
High runs of $100 will be paid on Saturday and Sunday.
There are only a couple of spots remaining at a $250 entry. However, all entries that have not been received at this point will need to include a $50 late fee as the deadline was June 10th. To forward entries or should you have additional questions, please contact:
