Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant joined a field of 128 entrants at the $4,000-added, 36th Annual Texas Open on the weekend of Sept 5-7 and late into Sunday evening was still among those standing on the winners' side bracket. Bryant was joined by a host of strong competitors, including Ronnie Wiseman, Brandon Shuff, Gabe Owen, and Sparky Ferrell, all of whom, by the same juncture, had been moved to the one-loss side. The event was being hosted by G-Cue Billiards in Round Rock, TX and was being streamed live on the Internet via Ustream.
Bryant opened his bid on Saturday with a 9-5 win over Bernard Walker and then shutout Viet Do. Late on Sunday night, he defeated Noel Torres 9-6 to move among the winners' side final 16. Joining them among the final 16 by late Sunday night were Chris Bartrum, Jason Brown, Nick Vita, Tommy Tokoph, David Henson, Adrian Lloyd, Tracy Sanders, Jamie Farrell, Justin Hall, Shane Winters, Syler Ochoa, Brian Hickman and Mickey Woinicki.
Wiseman, who was sent to the one-loss side by Robert Almaraz 9-3 in the opening round of play, got by Grady Cooper and Charlie Mora by identical 9-4 scores and then defeated Gordon Van DerVeer 9-6 late on Sunday night. Brandon Shuff struggled in his opening two matches, surviving hill-hill matchups versus Brian Sanders and Ted Bean, before moving west in a hill-hill match won by David Henson.
Owen opened his tournament bid with a 9-3 win over Corey Dordek, and was sent west in a hill-hill match against Jamie Farrell. He won his first match on the west side with a 9-8 win over Brian Sanders. Ferrell got by Richard Larque 9-3 and Leroy Mathis 9-6 before heading west on the heels of a hill-hill win by Shane Winters.
In addition to Bryant versus Martinez match, some of the key winners' side matchups scheduled for early Monday included Winters versus Ochoa, Chris Bartrum against Jason Brown and Justin Hall versus Jason Bagby. On the one-loss side, Brandon Shuff will play the winner of the Bobby Rivera and Champ Massengill match, and Juan Parra will face Wiseman.
