This past weekend (July 12-13, 2008), well known player Tony “T-Rex” Chohan took on a different kind of gamble – he hosted his second tournament along with Oak Park Que in Oak Park, Michigan. The venue guaranteed $2000 added for the $100 entry event ($60 women) and was played on Gold Grown nine-foot tables.
A total field of twenty-six players came out to take a chance at the prize fund with such names as Jason Kirkwood, Shannon Murphy, Danny Smith, and John Binion included on the roster to keep the hundred plus spectators on the edge of their seats around the clock.
In the end, Chohan showed that he could not only produce a great event, but he could also pull double duty and take top honors going undefeated through the field. After working his way through the winner's side of the chart, he secured the hot-seat match over Jeff Benoit 8-1 and waited it out for his last opponent of the weekend which ended up being John Binion. Binion pushed his way past Benoit in the semi-final round to have a chance at Chohan. Benoit started out on top as he was able to snag the first set in the true double elimination final 8-5, but ultimately fell in the second set by an almost identical score 8-4.
Chohan noted that future events are in the works and he hopes to provide dates in the near future, including a possible stop in Seattle. Special thanks to the management and staff at Oak Park Que, and to all that participated whether as a player and spectator.
